motivate and demotivate employees
Motivation can be termed as
the process of indoctrinating employees with unity of purpose and the need to
maintain harmonious relationship among them. There are several forms of
motivation which seek to make an employee willing to work. In addition it
increases an employee’s performance output, which increases the organization’s
turnover. In this Line, motivation plays a vital role in an organization’s
management. Therefore management needs to improve their motivational skills to
realize its benefits within the organization. A manager’s task is also to
ensure that employees deliver on the organization’s objectives and motivated
employees have a higher likelihood of performing
A managing should stimulate people to
action to realize defined goals. The word motivate means to move or activate
(Shah 2013).Hence anything that initiates certain action can be said to be
motivator with regards to management, motivation can be defined as the work
that a manager goes to inspire, encourage or impel people to take the required
action (Frey & Ostarloh, 2002) In modern management the aspect of employee
motivation is taken seriously and is seen as significant in the realization of
a company’s goals. Employee motivation is important for increased performance
level in any organization. It also leads to lower employee turnover and
absenteeism. This is because motivated employees tend to stay longer in a firm
(Hiam, 2003).Employee motivation also contributes to better utilization of
resources. This is because motivated employees feel compelled to ensure that
the company runs efficiently to realize the organization’s goals and objective
(Lipman,2013) The goals of motivated employees are thus in tandem with the
organization’s goals.
Employees motivation increases their
willingness to work. It create a need and desire in employees to better their
performance by perfecting their work. Another role of employee motivation in
modern management is the betterment of labor relation between management and
subordinates. This is because motivated employees are not likely to deviate
from what is expected of them hence this lowers rate of indiscipline (Chopra,
2002) motivated employees are also likely heed to their managers’ instructions.
Employees motivation also leads to better cooperation among employees of the
same level which leads to increased throughout.
Employees motivation also serves the role
of improving the knowledge level of employees (Evans, 1986) motivated employees
seek ways to improve their jobs performance and therefore undergoes personal development by improving their
skills (Ma2ddock &Fulton, 1998)The skill gained motivates the employee
further by expanding their horizons and opening them up to better career opportunities.
According to McGregor’s theory X, people naturally do not like work and will do
anything to avoid it. Hence people must be coerced to complete tasks. This is
where motivation comes in and employees therefore have a reason to work hard
(Shield 2001)
In conclusion employee motivation plays a
significant role modern management. Managers need to assess an employee’s need
to determine how to motivate them. Managers also need to realize that there
exist hygiene factors that do not motivate employees to perform. However, their
removal often affects their performance negatively. Therefore managers need to
ensure that employees are provided with hygiene factors, in additional to other
motivators to improve jobs performance. Managers may motivate employees using
monetary rewards benefits, promotes, and satisfying work contents.
