10 habits of a great boss
1.       A great boss have fun –Southwest airlines in the United States is one of the leading airlines in the world. There are many attributes of this airline which make it succeed. One of the most important is their culture of fun. This culture was created by herb Kelleher, the retired chairman of the airline. He loves to have fun. He might wear a funny Easter Bunny outfit, be involved in a boxing match with the head of a competing airline or might be seen on a big Harley Davidson motorcycle which his pilot gave him (Freiberg &Freiberg, 1994). This culture spreads throughout the organization and when employees have fun it becomes contagious. Employees who have fun usually translate into organizations which are profitable. Have fun, life is too short to not have fun. Make somebody laugh today. Kelleher says, “Happy and pleased employees take care of customers. And happy customers take care of the shareholder by coming back”.
2.       A great boss listens-Have you ever been around someone who does all the talking and little or no listening? Did you enjoy being with this person or working for this kind of a person? The best leaders are those who listen to the desires of the people. He listens to their problems and understands them.
3.       A great boss reprimands/corrects in private and praise in public –Recently my family and I had breakfast at a nice restaurant. However, the boss was upset with one of the employees and corrected the employee in a loud angry tone. The employee was evidently embarrassed and so were we. The best bosses correct in private but praise in public. Everyone likes to be appreciated and it is extra special to be praised in public.
4.       A great boss empowers others-this simply means the boss gets whatever the team needs and makes it available to others. Do they need training? Do they need a pat on the back and freedom to go out and get the job done? Then, that’s what the boss does. The boss give them the authority and freedom to go out and get the results some bosses want all decisions to go through him/her .this is opposite of empowered employee takes action to get the results valued by the organization (Nanus, 1992)
5.       A great boss encourages risk taking- Risk taking always precedes great victories .sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to climb Everest conquered the mountain only after taking great risk to his life and the lives of the guides and porters who helped him. Between 1920 and1952 seven teams of mountaineers tried to get to the top of Everest. Many people had died trying to make it to the top of the world’s tallest mountain. With the help of Tenzing Norgay, Hillary finally made it to the top of Everest on may 29, 1953. It was risky, dangerous and expensive but Norgay and Hillary are names the world will always remember because they are the first to conquer  Mt Everest (Maxwell , 2001). Friedrich Nietzsche said, Believe  me! The secret of reaping the greatest fruitfulness and greatest enjoyment from life is to live dangerously!
6.       A great boss celebrates often-bestselling authors Jim Kouzes and Barry posner recommend celebrating at your next meeting “Exemplary leaders use every opportunity to celebrate the values and the victories. Do the same view every occasion on which your constituents gather as a chance for some kind of celebration, big or small.” Celebrations are just plain fun, make it a part of the culture of the organization and reap the benefits!
7.       A great boss is passionate-The people who get noticed are those who are passionate people. There is nothing boring, stiff or listless about passionate people. Passionate people seem to bring out the passion in me. Passion is contagious.
8.       A great boss gives frequent feedback-In sports, time outs are called so that coaches and players can give and receive feedback. This helps the team make the adjustment needed for the required. It seems obvious but if there is no feedback the employee will think everything is okay, no change is necessary. As a child I would begin a drawing and frequently rush over to where my mother was so I could get her frequent feedback. We desire and respond to feedback
9.       A great boss practices integrity-A person of integrity is a person who can be trusted to do what he says he will do, even when it hurts. That’s right ,even when it hurts you personally.
10.   A great boss communicates clearly-every employee deserves to know what is expected and required. Great bosses speak clearly and make their directions clear. Keep your directions simple, so simple a child can understand them. The mistakes will be fewer, the staff will be happier and so will you. When the boss communicates clearly there is less stress and fatigue among the employees. Stressed employees don’t perform well and get poor result keep communicating often and clearly.
